IMPACT REPORT: 2024
Why Tanzania?
2/3 of Tanzanians live below the income poverty line of $1.25 per day. 1/3 live below the basic needs poverty line of less than 0.96 USD per day.
The risk of major infectious disease remains very high in Tanzania, especially for environmental diseases that are waterborne or caused by food, vector-borne, due to water contact, and due to animal contact.
3.2 million children aged 7-17 are out of school, of which 1.2 million have never attended. The secondary school net enrollment rate is 27%. Only 34% of those enrolled complete their secondary education. Only 58% of students complete primary school.
45% of Tanzanian households have safe water. 35% have improved toilets.
The under-5 mortality rate is 1.7 times higher than the world average.
30% of children are stunted. Many Tanzanians, especially women, suffer from deficiencies in essential vitamins and minerals, including iron and vitamin A. Limited dietary diversity and challenges in accessing affordable, nutritious foods contribute to these issues.
In 2024 Empower Tanzania continued to walk alongside Tanzanians, listening and then addressing the underlying issues that hinder resiliency.
Our health programs are soaring and there is impactful change in the Same district where we’ve been operating for over 15 years. We have now moved to Babati Town Council district with our public health programming, implementing a research program utilizing videos through pico-projectors. Existing and new community health workers (CHWs) educate and record progress in 33,600 households!
Our vulnerable kids education programming has expanded to include secondary school support, in response to the parents. We continue to be inspired by kids, who with their wide-eyed hopefulness, cause us to act and to work harder for impactful change.
The 98 women who make up our Vumwe Designs (formerly GBV) groups decided to form a community based organization (CBO) and have elected officers. Empower will continue to walk alongside these dedicated, strong women as they gain autonomy via a new CBO.
Tanzania is challenged by a changing environment and we have addressed the aims of the government to involve youth (30 years and under) in our agriculture and environmental activities. Our Kirinjiko farm is the site of trainings, meetings, and a myriad of plantings! Thanks to our partners at SAIPRO, a local NGO, we have a new shade net structure at the Kirinjiko site!
We have set our eyes on clean water and sanitation – this time in the mountain village of Ndolwa, located in Vudee ward of the Same district. The existing water is unclean and inadequate, especially in the dry season. This multiyear project has begun!
We obtain wisdom each year, learning of the big picture in a complex environment, but we keep on working in hundreds of small and meaningful ways. We thank our dedicated community of supporters who inspire us to not pull back where others have!

Empower Tanzania is committed to creating sustainable change, in partnership with people living in rural Tanzania, through community-led solutions.
Empower Tanzania works in partnership with Tanzanians to improve their quality of life. We address the underlying issues that hinder resiliency including health care, education, agriculture practices, markets for products, and safe water and sanitation.
Empower Tanzania is a community-based listening organization. We believe that finding answers to complex issues requires working together with communities to create impactful, sustainable change. We pursue this approach in all that we do.
WHERE WE WORK
The United Republic of Tanzania was formed as a sovereign state in 1964 when Tanganyika and Zanzibar united, making Tanzania the largest country in East Africa. Tanzania is situated just south of the equator in sub-Saharan Africa. Tanzania has a population of approximately 55 million and over half of the population are children. The primary languages spoken are English and Swahili, although many tribal languages are spoken also.
A majority of the population lives in rural areas where poverty is the greatest, and our work is generally focused on rural communities. Safe water is not accessible to a majority of Tanzanian households. Gender-based violence affects one-third of all women in Tanzania. Only 16% of women and 23% of men are educated past the elementary level. (CIA Government Data Library, 2020)
Empower Tanzania serves the Kilimanjaro Region through programs in health, education, economic empowerment, and agriculture/environment. We work in partnership with Tanzanians to find sustainable solutions to many of the challenges that impact their quality of life. We are expanding into new regions in Tanzania in 2024!
